5 Min Excerpt Reshoot and Editing strategies

Once again, a shoot for this excerpt involved lots of cold and rain. The reshoot was quite short and we didn't get very much footage from it, but I'm quite happy with some of the shots, especially these

one. The goal of this reshoot was to flush out the romantic segment of the excerpt, and shoot some of the transition shots that will be used into the psychedelic "trip scene". The scene against the wall will be animated over to reference a similar shot in Wonderwall (1967), and the cigarette shot will also be
used to create an animated transition from the bridge scene
to this scene.
One of the main challenges I've currently been facing is trying to blend all of the different footage together, whether it's from different cameras or different shoot days.

The colorgrade is going to be key in this, and while I've been focusing on making everything look somewhat consistent, I have to remember that I'm not only going for consistency but also a specific style.

Since I'm using non-linear editing, I've had to learn now to let perfectionism go a bit and not feel restrained by more conventional techniques. I was originally feeling like I had to keep all the scenes together, but since this is a teaser with non-liner style, I've had to force myself to let go a bit and have fun     with the edit rather than trying to make the edit look perfect. I'm trying to focus more on the flow.

I feel like I have enough footage for the romantic segment and have a rough cut for this, so I have sent it to my musician who is composing the score to work on it together and see what fits, while I finish the colorgrade and then match the draft to the music she sends me. I'm currently also planning what lamination needs done as I only have two weeks left to complete the piece. As well as this, I'll be doing two mini shoots: one for B roll to animate over (only 2-3 shots of plants), and a live action shoot on a background to then be overlayed over liquid light show and animation. That will be all of the shooting needed done then I'll be able to put everything together.

What I've found about my work style when having to do shoots for myself is that I have a very sporadic way of filming and putting things together. While I came into this shoot with a clear vision I've found that when things don't look exactly how I picture them I get very stressed, but working with the footage for a while and sitting with it allows me to see what actually is feasible. The shoots have been made significantly more difficult due to the rain and cold, but shooting at night is a challenge that I don't think I fully understood the difficulty of. I've found that some shots that looked fine on the monitor while filming look far to dark or just wrong when they reach the editing segment. I know that I will have to be much more strict with my planning for the final film, but this assignment will be a learning experience with so many concepts and techniques being combined, so seeing the things I've planned either come together or not will inform my practice later on.
