Filming Plan for the 5 Min Excerpt
The big filming day for the semester is going to be on the 14th of March, and I've been working on the call sheet, storyboard, and risk assessment.
There are two main elements to be shot during that day: the liquid light show, and the live action portion outside.
1. Liquid Light Show
12:00 - 15:00
This will be my first attempt at a fully digital LLS, but will still have the projector available for other experimentation. The goal of this shoot is to get high quality footage for the excerpt that can be manipulated later, while also applying some practical effects in the moment. I've bought an LED tracing tablet to use as the lighting source underneath the plates rather than just the projector. While I was very happy with how the last round of light show shooting went, the goal is to be able to shoot it from the top down, and that isn't possible with the projector arm in the way. We'll be using a tripod that can film at a 90 degree angle down as well as a macro lens to get the smaller details as vividly as possible. We'll also be trying out the kaleidoscope lens that I've been using on it as well.
2. Live Action
18:30 - 21:30
The live action segment is still being planned out, but I do have a few key shots that I'd like to either attempt for the first time or re-attempt. The focus of this shoot is the 5 minute excerpt, which in my case will be a kind of trailer/ showcasing of the techniques used in the final movie, not a traditional trailer or one scene.
I have 3 shooting locations that I'll be using, all quite close together
- brick wall (for Wonderwall- inspired shots)
- street
- bridge
I would much rather have the church and laundromat that I'll be using in the final film, but haven't done the location scouting for the final film. If there is a possibility of reshoots in the next month I will make having one of these locations in the excerpt my priority.
The techniques and shots I'll be focussing on with this portion are:
- small animations (plants, signs, etc)
- possible use of reflective sheets for practical effects (still deciding which practical effects are feasible to try on this shooting day)
- animation interacting or stemming from the live action
- close ups of bodies and micro interractions
- references to paintings + other films
The focus of the excerpt is to showcase the transition from the mundane to the psychedelic that will characterise the final film.
