More Portfolio Tests
For this video I thought I'd just show the results of two of the things I've been experimenting with throughout the year: lens filters and projection. I also used a bit of found audio to make this more engaging to watch.
This was my first time trying the kaleidoscope lens on an actual camera instead of just my phone, and it worked great. I had 4 takeaways from this:
1. movement is key - while the static shots looked nice they quickly became repetitive, even with the actress moving around. I found that taking the camera off the tripod and creating movement in that way made for a much more engaging shot, and made the light flashes more random.
2. light is good- having different lights for the lens to bounce off of made the lens seem less repetitive, this is something I'll be experimenting with more, seeing how this kind of refraction works in comparison to the refraction I'll get from using the rainbow lens I've ordered
3. Spinning the filter during shooting is possible without it falling off, and this creates an effect that is almost exactly what I've been going for with some of my digital experiments and the rotation in those, inspired by Psych Out and The Trip.
4. One issue with using this on the actual camera, is that while the lens can be used it can't be moved as freely as just hovering it over a phone. The distortion will always stay the same rather than being more or less magnified. I'm considering some alternative ways of shooting to accommodate for this as I feel like there will be some scenes where I'd like the distortion to be much more extreme than what is seen in this video.
I did also you a diffusion lens filter for some parts of this video, but as it is a very slight it didn't make much of a difference and I'm looking into other diffusion techniques.
For the projection, I did make one of my own images to project on, but once again what I found to be the most important part of what I was shooting for this was movement. Moving the camera quite quickly and randomly seemed to give the most similar effect to some of the part scenes in Psych Out and The Trip, but they didn't have that much camera movement. Since I didn't have any of my own animations to project, I decided to use these three music videos to get a sense of what works and what doesn't.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1qynuxstvY&list=PL1ywvug1r6Tj_E0o_eb7-nY-25-ninPOE
