Storyboarding Exercise

In class today we were set an activity to start with a picture, which we then wrote a one sentence story about, and then in a group to take turns drawing panels for the storyboard of this scene to see where it goes. I used the same picture of the couple kissing with the green light as I've been using on so many of my posts and mood boards. The sentence that I then came up with was, "After a long journey, two people join together bathed in light."

I found working with a partner surprisingly helpful, because even though I've had some of the key shots in my head for a while, a lot of Alex's ideas were ones I wouldn't have thought of myself, and I'll definitely be using them in my own scene. I was most intrigued by the shot of their reflections in the water, as well as his idea to have a shot of the windows unlit and then to have a shot of the characters faces suddenly be lit up with lights, which would make sense with the idea that I'd had to have the presence of the light at night be a surreal thing. I also liked the shot from above, which I think would be quite beautiful as an establishing shot and be a nice use of negative space given that so many of my shots in my film are going to be very busy and colourful, having slower scenes like this with negative space would bring more calm, cinematic moments.

Durning the workshop our lecturer also encouraged us to look at our storyboards from a creative perspective but also from a practical standpoint. Due to the conceptual nature of my film, location is not very important to much of it, since a lot of it will just be floods of color and animation, as well as on the street but the lecture has encouraged me to think critically about the locations that I will be using. For now, the church is definitely a location that I should start scooping out soon and discussing availability, and I've had a rough plan for something being shot in a laundromat as well. While I don't have any churches in mind yet I think I definitely want a Catholic Church (more stained glass, and ornate), and I do have a laundromat in mind. I was originally quite worried about having to shoot at night and have permission to have these places be open late and have to maybe pay for this, but I might just plan to have some of these key scenes filmed in the winter so that it's still dark outside quite early and I can avoid some of the logistic of having places stay open late.

After this I'll be looking to have more feedback and ideas from classmates for scenes I'm working on, and I plan to start making more in depth storyboards for some of the scenes I only have a small concept of to see how they expand into more concrete plans.
