Original Script!!!

I found the script that I wrote for this film idea when I was 17, to has lots of issues and was an unfinished first draft but it's interesting to see how it has evolved in the past four years. I hadn't looked at it in ages and was surprised by how little dialogue it originally had, in my memory it originally was mostly dialogue but from what I can see here it has always been a very visual script.

EXT. OUTSIDE OF A BAR AT NIGHT

BOY is leaning against a wall, looking at his phone as it dies. He looks around, lost. GIRL walks up to him, she’s dressed like she was just out too, with uncomfortable heels and her makeup smudged. She stumbles slightly as she walks towards him.

DIALOGUE INTRODUCING EACH OTHER + LACK OF PHONES SCENE WALKING DOWN THE STREET

EXT. A PLAYGROUND, COMPLETELY DARK EXCEPT FROM A DIM STREETLIGHT NEARBY

There’s a jungle gym with monkey bars and a slide, with a big platform that connects the two, as well as little steps to get up on the platform. As the two characters walk up to the playground, it goes from looking normal size to towering above them. GIRL runs up to it first, going up to the steps and bounding up them. As she reaches the top she stands on the platform, putting her hand up to grab a set of bars that keeps her from falling off the platform, much like a cage. While the jungle gym looks normal size from her perspective, he looks tiny as she looks down on him. Looking up from BOY’s perspective, she’s small too, on a giant jungle gym, he has to crane his neck to see her.

(yelling) Come up! GIRL

BOY shakes his head, smiling.

BOY
(yelling back) All the way up there?

GIRL Yes! Or are you chicken?

BOY looks up at her, then runs up to the stairs as well, climbing the stairs as fast as he can, slipping slightly as he goes up. He falters a bit, and as he comes up,

GIRL makes room for him up on the platform. They both look down at the ground below him, and BOY takes a drag of his cigarette. As he puts it in his mouth again, GIRL takes it from between his lips and takes a drag for herself. She leaves a slight lipstick mark on the end of it. The orange light from the cigarette lights up both of their faces, creating a little spotlight. As they look down, the only other light is coming from street lamps, glowing slightly under them. A white plastic bag passes them, like tumbleweed.

BOY turns around to face the monkey bars, GIRL turns around to watch him. He puts his cigarette in his mouth, then rubs his hands dry on his jeans. He grabs onto the money bars above him, hanging in place on the first bar for a minute. As he looks down he is high off the ground, he looks back up at his hands and goes a few rungs forward. He looks down, and a long shot shows him high off the ground. He lets go, and falls a few inches to the ground, showing the playground to be back at regular size, but once he makes his way back to the front to see GIRL about to go down the slide, it looks huge again.

She slides down, taking ages to go down, as she does she doesn’t try to hold her dress down, which rides up slightly, and as she reaches the bottom of the slide, it has ridden up one leg almost entirely, her face is flushed and she laughs as she fails to stand up gracefully. BOY hold out a hand and helps her stand up, their hands lingering for a second before they let go and keep walking down the street.

2.

EXT. A QUIET STREET, WITH A FENCE ALONG IT, WITH A GARDEN AND A CHURCH RIGHT BEHIND A GATE, ONLY HELD TOGETHER BY A CHAIN WITH A PADLOCK ATTACHED TO IT.

BOY and GIRL look at the fence, then back at each other, and without saying anything, BOY goes up to the fence, living his leg up to stand up on a railing halfway up the gate, then putting his hands up on the top railing, pulling himself up, then climbs over the gate, landing on his feet on the other side, facing GIRL. She looks at the gate, sizing it up. Then, without warning, tosses the heels she was carrying in her right hand over the gate, barely missing BOY, who ducks his head to avoid them. She puts her foot up on the railing herself, and ungracefully tries to copy BOY’s movements, instead she stays sitting up on the fence, one leg on either side. She sits up and looks around for a minute, acting as though she meant to be up there. She puts her hand up to her forehead, as though shielding her eyes from the sun. As she looks down the street, a speck of green light peeks through the buildings at her.

GIRL Look! We’re almost home!

BOY cranes his neck, his head leaning against the fence, but sees nothing. He props his foot back on the fence, lifting himself up until him and GIRL’s heads are at the same height. He puts his hand up to his forehead, mocking her. He holds on to the top of the gate with his other hand, leaning to the side, so he hangs off the fence, slightly, making it shake a bit as he does. As the fence shakes, GIRL looks down, and uses both her hands to hold onto the gate on either side of her, wobbling slightly.

BOY

GIRL

BOY The green light?

that far.

Where?
Right there, silly!

GIRL
What else would I be looking at? We aren’t

3.

BOY slowly lowers himself back down to the ground, and waits for GIRL to make her way down. She leans forward, both her hands grabbing much too hard on the railing in front of her, and lifts up her leg to lean on the other side of the railing. Finally, she has both feet on the lower rung, and hops down on the other side. She picks her shoes up, holding them both in one hand.

They stand next to each other, looking at the front door of the small church. GIRL steps forward, pushing it slightly, the pulls lightly on the doorknob. Once they’re both sure the door won’t open, the both make their way on a narrow paved path to the back of the church. There is a much smaller, less ornate door there. BOY pushes lightly on it, not expecting for it to open, but it moves slightly. He looks at GIRL, then pushes the door slightly harder, and it swings open enough for them to squeeze through it and into the church.

INT. THE CHURCH

There is no lighting, except for moonlight shining through the stained glass windows, which shine dim coloured shapes on the altar and the first few shades of pews. The both walk up to the aisle, the back of the pews is lined with candles. BOY takes out a match and lights the two on either side of it. GIRL takes a lighter out of her purse and starts lighting candles on one side, he sees her and starts to light some on the other side as well. Once they are both satisfied with their work, they walk back through the pews to the middle of the aisle. The light is still very much the same, but as they look around the light from outside seems to get lighter, while it is still very much nighttime. The stained glass now fills the room with bright colours, and the two look around, admiring it.

BOY wanders slowly to the front of the aisle, looking around, while GIRL stays in the back, holding her hands up to catch the light, admiring the colours shining onto her hand. She turns around to look at him, and he has his arms spread out.

BOY Run! Come on!

GIRL looks at him, the drops her shoes and starts running to him. As she

4.

runs her bare feet barely seem to hit the ground, and as she looks back up at him he yells,

BOY
She keeps running, but looks doubtful now, and cries back weakly,

GIRL Are you sure?

BOY Yes, just do it!

Just as she’s about to reach him, her feet stop looking like they’re floating, and one of them catches on the carpet, and she trips, falling into his arms as she does. He catches her clumsily, both of them falling to the floor, their faces flushed and their limbs tangled. The colours from the stained glass seem to move together, as they both try to catch their breath and untangle themselves.

CUT to both of them laying on the floor of the church where they had landed before, now side by side. They look up at the ceiling, and their faces are covered in soft coloured lights, that seem to ripple across them.

EXT. GATE IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH

GIRL stands on the outside of the gate, holing her shoes with her arms crossed, looking around, while he jumps down from the gate. He turns to look at her, then holds his arm out for her to hold. They keep walking down the street, a faint green light in the distance.

Jump!

5.

INT. 24 HOUR STORE

Fluorescent lights are almost blinding for the first bit of this scene, which slowly dims as it goes on. The whole store is a bright white, looking clean, almost like a hospital. The products on the shelves are bright, saturated colours that contrast with the white of the store. As they walk in there is a woman at the counter, with badly bleached hair reading a magazine. She barely looks up as the walk past her, lazily following them with her eyes for a second before licking her finger and turning a page of the magazine.

GIRL walks down one of the aisles, running her finger across the bags of candy as she does. CUT to BOY on the other side of the store, running his fingers across packets of chips. FROM ABOVE the both go down their respective aisles, still dragging their hands along, until they get to the end. The both turn onto the same aisle, and walk together down that one. They both stop, looking at something on either side, their backs turned to each other.

A bell rings as somebody opens the door, BOY and GIRL both look up at the same time. A GUY their age comes in, the woman at the counter giving him as much attention as she did them. He’s stumbling slightly, but looks happy, his eyes wandering the aisles until the land on BOY and GIRL. His eyes and smile widen as he looks at them, his arms opening wide in greeting.

GUY

Troops!
BOY and GIRL both put down a pack they were holding, and walk up to him.

GIRL opens here arms wide in the same way. She hugs him tentatively.
GUY slumps over to the closest aisle to him, and picks up a bag of gummy

worms, holding them up to BOY.

GUY
(Slurring his words slightly) Starving I am.

Ab-so-lutely famished.
He puts them in the crook of his arm, then bends down to examine things on

the bottom shelf. He picks up a bag of gummy cherries. He keeps scuttling around

6.

as BOY and GIRL watch him. He looks down at his watch. The face is far too big for his wrist. Instead of having normal numbers, it only shows the day and the month (October 21st), but doesn’t say what time it is. He starts scuttling down the aisle faster, taking things off the shelves faster, not even looking at them. He goes back down the aisle and directs himself to the two of them.

GUY Where did you two come from?

BOY
I think we could ask you the same question.

GUY
Well now that you mention it, I’m not sure

really, neither here nor there. I’ve just been wandering, and hopefully I will wander myself to somewhere I should be!

He looks at the two of them, looking awfully pleased with his answer.

GUY
(to himself) Yes, I do suppose I will.

As he says this, he walks pst them and up towards the counter, ungracefully dumping his loot onto it, covering up part of the woman’s magazine. She looks up, unimpressed, then rings him up. The store is quite other than a small buzz coming from the fridge and the beeping of the scanner. When she’s done, he hands her a crumpled up bill and she hands him a bag, which he slings on his arm, then turns back to BOY and GIRL.

BOY quickly grabs a pack of cigarettes, and GIRL a pack of bright green gum.

EXT. OUTSIDE THE 24 HOUR STORE

The bright fluorescent lights from the window shine on GUY’s face as he looks at BOY and GIRL, who are both facing away from the window, the light creating a slight halo around their heads. GUY looks at them both, then takes a red rose out of a pocket in the inside of his jacket, he gives it to GIRL, who takes it from his and curtseys slightly. GUY bows to her, then to BOY.

GIRL
I hope you wander yourself somewhere

wonderful.

GUY turns away and walks back down the street, as the two watch him, he

7.

stumbles slightly, then fades into the darkness.

8.

EXT. ANOTHER STREET

A car passes as the walk side by side. GIRL has put the rose behind her ear, and BOY is opening his new pack of cigarettes.
