Current Progress - Portfolio Work

Since I haven't posted on here in a while I thought I'd give a bit of an update on what I'm currently working on. Our portfolio for this semester is due in mid December, so I'm trying to get three main things done.

1. Animation Practice

One of the musicians I've been working with has sent me a 46 second song, and this has reminded me of an animation project I'd started over the summer, attempting to use adobe illustrator for frame by frame animation, which I then gave up. Now having more experience with adobe animate, I'm restarting the project, this time drawing the keyframes in illsutrator, and then using them as a guide in adobe animate for frame by frame animation that I'm drawing by hand. Progress on this has so far been quite slow. I've included below some screenshots of frames I'm currently working on.

After talking to my lecturer about this and how it fits into my final project and its themes, I've been thinking more about ways I could refine this animation. At first it was just a test to see if this is a style I'd like to use later on in my final project, but she encouraged me to think about how themes of change, morphing, and symbolism connect to my work. I will be looking into this in terms of haptic visuality and other literature that fits in with my current visual language, to see how I can expand on the two.

Hopefully I will have this test done on time to be able to  make another animation which revolves more around colour than shape.

2.  Combining Found Footage and My Own Work
I have several collections of found footage now which I've been trying to decide what to do with, and have recently also filmed a few clips that I'd like to include in my portfolio. A challenge that I've been considering for my final project is how I'l be able to combine the two in a way that makes sense aesthetically but also is not jarring for the story and viewer's understanding. This shoot was also a chance to try out some of the new lens filters I bought, and I'd like to include some of this experimentation in my portfolio as well.

3. Research
I'm currently trying to get access to as many magazines as I can from the period to research how the techniques I'm interested were achieved, mainly Films and Filming, as well as American Cinematographer. I'm also looking into haptic visuality, montage, and resources on combining animation with live action.
