Sunflowers
This week we were assigned to create a short film on an object of our choice. I decided on a vase of sunflowers. Rather than having a narrative I wanted to explore what taking them out of their usual domestic space would do. This was partially inspired by the Peter Todd videos we have been studying. I was once again using the same camera as last time and was limited by the white balance and ISO options, but this allowed me to play around with the colorgrading a bit to try and make the shots look as cohesive as possible.
Shooting this presented several challenges, the main one being that the vase is not made for an outdoor space. I had a vision of it in the middle of the grass surrounded by nothing else but the wind and ground did not allow for this. Taking the flowers back into nature stresses how temporary they now are as they have been Brough out of it and tamed to be able to be displayed in the home. While the trees and flowers shown move in the wind and will stay alive, the sunflowers are now fragile and unable to stay in the places you see them in for long periods of time. They did fall over twice (not shown). What may not seem like a "dangerous" shot was in filming very stressful, and I tried to cover this up as much as possible in the edit. While not refined, I found this a fun challenge to shoot and edit, especially the title card. I think it would also be interesting to see what interpretations others take from this without context.
